Egypte staat ook bekend om nog iets, alle mensen die op vakantie zijn geweest naar dit land hoor ik er over. De mensen, lees verkopers die heel aanhoudend zijn. Het blijft grappig om te zien hoe wij westerlingen bepaalde gewoontes niet kennen. Vooral onderhandelen en verkopen doen wij niet tot vrijwel niet. ‘Dat doe ik thuis toch ook niet’ en ‘ik voel me daar niet fijn bij’ zijn de belangrijkste redenen. Want zo zijn wij. Wij denken dat onze gewoontes normaal zijn en dat iedereen die anders doet dus niet spoort. Het detail dat ‘het westen’ net iets kleiner is dan de rest van de wereld samen vergeten we graag want ja wij hebben toch het geld?

Maar dat was dus een stukje van mijn persoonlijke opinie. Wat mij daarnaast ook opviel is hoe graag Egyptenaren iets verkopen. Je komt werkelijk niet van ze af, aankijken lijkt gelijk te staan aan kopen en als er stof op je schoenen, dat blijft plakken omdat ze 2 dagen ervoor gewaxt zijn, zit is dat ‘not good’ en gaan ze op hun knieeen voor je. Uiteraard omdat ze iets gaan doen waar ze dik geld mee kunnen verdienen maar ervanaf komen lukt vrijwel niet.
En toch schrikt dit af, ze willen zo graag dat het eng is. Ze stralen zowat uit dat ze je mooi gaan afzetten en dat jij hun persoonlijke goudklomp zijn. Zelfs voor groente op de markt moet je uitkijken, ookal staan er bordjes met (arabische) prijzen, dan nog vragen ze 3x zoveel voor minder dan op het bordje word vermeld. En als je dan een faire (nog te hoge) prijs wilt maken worden ze boos of doen ze alsof ze beroofd worden van hun brood, hun kinderen verhongeren of hun vrouw op sterven ligt en geen mediceinen kan betalen. En nu moet ik zeggen dat alle praktijken mij mee vielen, toch was dit verre weg het ergste land dat ik tot nu toe heb mee gemaakt en is het wel 1 van de redenen dat ik niet denk de komende 10 jaar er weer heen te gaan. Afgezien van de vele tempels die zo’n beetje mijn neus uit kwamen.
Overigens kunnen ze ook heel vriendelijk zijn hoor, dan krijg je gratis een setje postkaarten of een kleine tulband in je handen gedrukt. Uiteraard moet je dan wel een kleine ‘tip’ betalen. Als je dat weer niet doet dan word het eng, tenzij je een vrouw bent natuurlijk, dat maakt het net iets makkelijker

En toch vraag je je dan af, werken die praktijken dan toch wel? Want als iedereen zou reageren als mij dan zouden ze toch vrijwel niets verkopen? Gezien mijn score van 1 hoofddoek en 1 set kaarten voor een heel mooi bedrag via de gids kunnen ze hier toch niet hun brood van verdienen.
Zou het dan echt zo zijn dat veel mensen toch maar dat beeldje kopen dat ze op de vorige markt ook al hadden gekocht omdat de verkoper zo’n betrouwbaar gezicht had? Of zou men echt iets kopen om van de verkoper af te raken?
Ik kan het mij niet voorstellen maar ja, ze doen het niet voor niets op deze manier.

Verder was het een geweldige reis en is het een ontzettend mooi land, dat dan weer wel!

Gelukkig stonden we niet alleen voor de gezelligheid op het plein, we gingen ook nog een feestje bezoeken in het Patronaat. Wederom een onthaal met champagne kwamen we binnen. Helaas allemaal single dus mochten we niet trouwen om er de volgende dag achter te komen dat het niet een geldig huwelijk was, jammer.
Ja het was gewoon een geweldig feest met de bijna meer dan briljante band ‘Memphis Maniacs’. Wat kunnen die geweldige live gespeelde mash-ups maken! Mocht je ze ooit tegen komen, zeker even blijven staan, dat doe ik de volgende keer ook weer Daarna de hele nacht gedanst, waar ik tijdens het schrijven wel enigszins spijt van heb als ik eerlijk ben. Maar ook die pijn is gelukkig fijn. Om 7 uur begroete mijn bedje mij met veel liefde en warmte!

Gelukkig mocht ik er geen loze dag van maken. Rond 12 uur was het al raak, ik werd weer voor gek verklaart! Een beter begin bestaat toch niet? Ik blijk niets veranderd. De reden was niet zo sterk overigens, ik ging een nieuwjaarsduik maken. De andere gek die mij had overgehaald was gelukkig ook op tijd wakker en de taxi stond al dagen voor mijn deur geparkeerd!

Waardoor het nou precies zo gezellig was weet ik niet. Was het omdat Paul te weinig geslapen had of doordat de anderen gewoon nog onder invloed waren? Natuurlijk was ik geheel clean(denk ik) want ik moest rijden maar dat tussendoor. In ieder geval, 1 minuut in de auto en het plezier begon en is niet meer gestopt tot iedereen thuis was. Prima oefening voor de buikspieren gehad! En dat duiken? Dat is zeker een aanrader. Je denkt dat het koud is, je voelt je koud maar toch is het niet koud (toch?). In ieder geval voelde in die snee in mijn voet pas na het douche ‘s avonds. We hadden al besproken dat er best veel mensen last moesten hebben gehad van die scheermesjes op het strand, bij deze bevestigd.

Ja, veel plezier, veel genoten op dag 1. En aangezien een goed begin het halve werk is en ik verder ook hard werk moet dit wel een geweldig jaar worden met teveel positieve verrassingen!

MediaWiki

It happens everyone, you cannot remind a password of some account. Especially with Administration accounts this happens. And that administration account is just that one that you really need!

Well, that’s what i had with an MediaWiki installation. The Sysop account was lost, no e-mail address filled in so no recovery possible. Luckily i found the solution and I’m going to share it with you.

 

UPDATE user SET
user_password=md5(concat(user_id,’-',md5(‘YourPassword‘))) where
user_name =’Username‘ ;

This little MySQL code is all you need. The password in MySQL is hashed with MD5 and that again is hashed with your userid.
Do not forget to change the password and the username you want to reset. Also if you are using a prefix for the tables make that change.

When you are a developer or website builder one of the most important subjects besides content and the subject of your site is security. When you are building a application yourself this is even the most important and probably time consuming subject of all. When using software build by some organisation, like WordPress, most security should be in place. But as always, when you don’t close the door everybody can walk in.
In this post i will show the security tips i found usefull and explain them as simple as possible.

I made 3 groups of security tips. The most easy tips on top, the more technical on bottom.

General tips

The biggest security leaks are made by the users of the software. A easy password for example that everybody can guess. Here is a list of some security tips that can be followed without any problems.

Do not use the username admin for the admin account

Do not use a username that indicates that you have administer rights. For example Admin. In WordPress it is not possible to change your username without editing the database itself.

Use another show name than the login name

In the profile settings you can change the name that is showed to the world. You can find this under ‘users’ -> ‘Your profile’.

Use safe passwords

When filling in a password WordPress shows the safety of it. Take something that nobody would guess easy, something that is not in the dictionary.

Update as soon as possible

WordPress shows on the dashboard it there are updates of WordPress or one of the plugins that are used. Update them as soon as possible. But don’t forget to check the compatibility of the plugins.

Keep an backup

When there is a problem it is usefull to have a complete backup of your WordPress. Not only the database (see plugins) but also a copy of all WordPress files. This way it is easyer to repear a broken WordPress.

Some interesting plugins that make your WordPress site even more secure.

Secure WordPress

A set of 11 options to secure your WordPress even more. Think of hiding the WordPress version and adding index.php files to protect from listing folders. Very simple tool that dous the work for you.

WP Security Scan

Plugin adds some reporting screens that show the security. Think of a database check and chmod check. The screens are quite basic.

Database Backup

If, for some reason, a hacker gets access to your WordPress website it is nice to have a backup of your database. With this you can get back your old posts. As we can expect there are loads of plugins that can do this for you. Here a selection of my favorites:
Online Backup for WordPress – Very nice looking plugin. It can backup online to a online service. They give 3 backup options. Only 50MiB storage is for free.
WordPress Database Backup - Very simple plugin. It dous where it is for. It backups all tables. Depending on your wishes it can schedule from hourly to weekly. It will send the backup to your e-mail box.
Nice addition is that it is able to backup not WordPress tables too.

Define salt keys in wp-config.php

In the wp-config you can find 8 lines where you can add salt keys. Using this the security will improve a lot. Salt keys are used to hash the passwords and make it much harder to decode the passwords. It is allways good to change this values, also if they are filled in!

And yes, most websites now are making images for there headings. This way everybody can see the font as you ment it. Nice to see but not easy to maintain. And better yet there is another option!

In CSS3 there is the @font-face property. With this you can include your own font in the StyleSheets. After the font is included you can use it everywhere on your website.
Below is a example how @font-face can be added in  your StyleSheet.

@font-face {  font-family: Gentium; src: local(Gentium), url(/fonts/Gentium.ttf); } H1 {  font-family: Gentium; } 

The font-family directs to the CSS font-family property. With src you can give the source of the font. In this example it first looks on the local system, if the font is not there it will load it from your website.
There are a lot of possibilities with @font-face. for example you can use it to make a font alias for more then 1 fonts. This could be nice if you want to use a font that has more then 1 name of you can look if the user has a look alike font on his computer.
In the example below the font-family is Japanes, with looks up for 3 fonts.

  src: local(HiraKakuPro-W3), local(Meiryo), local(IPAPGothic);
}

It is even possible to add the unicode to @font-face. This could be nice for multi language website, depending on the Unicode of the visitor the right font can be set without programming. For all possibilities have a look at the W3C documentation: http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-fonts/ 

For the history lovers: @font-face property has been available since CSS2 and was first available in IE5. But it was only working for 'Embedded Open Type' fonts and not adopted by other browsers. Since the  CSS3 the @font-face property has been working with all common font systems and at this moment it is supported in the most important browsers.

For now i do not have a lot of experience with WordPress, but for what i read about WordPress it is one of the most flexible CMS/Blog systems around. Some years ago i used Joomla and fight-ed against it to let it do what i wanted. So then i started to make my own CMS. The disadvantage of building for myself is that it works for what i want. But there is nothing else working. So for every project i started from scratch.
I know, if i was not that lazy i could have build something nice by now. But hey, then i would not use WordPress.

So what i want is flexibility, so that i can move some old projects from my school period to WordPress giving it a second life. Surprisingly a lot of things do look like a blog in the basics. Take for example a webshop.

If you see every item in your shop like a blog item.
The category is what it is, shoes, pants, t-shirts ect.
The tags are the colors and sizes.
Ofcourse there is no cart and the layout is not that great but it could work!

Ideal, for me, it would be if i can run more then one site without installing the CMS every time, and guess what, WordPress can do that! But that’s something for the far future.

So for now i have chosen a theme from the themes available on WordPress.org. Later on i will make my own theme.
I’m collecting the plug-ins that i need for security, statistics and some other features i like on a blog. After that i will organize things like categories and tags to make the blog really a interesting resource for you people.

If you are programming or designing with for example HTML, CSS, PHP, Ruby, jQuery, Java, some api’s or even drupal this is the place to be. It shows the api on a easy way.
It is possible to search easy through all functions and more.

One of the sad things is that they do not yet support HTML5 or CSS3, but there is a new version coming, hope that is will get better indeed.
